TIL: US citizens living and working in Australia have our superannuation (mandatory retirement savings, like a 401(k)) taxed by the IRS as ordinary income. Including investment earnings. Even if you have moved to Australia permanently. That's actually fucked.

By default the US government requires all citizens living overseas to pay tax to the US govt on what they make even if they pay tax in the country they reside in. It’s messed up. Lots of people renounce citizenship when they leave the US perminantly.

Yes, messed up, however with most countries (Australia included) there's a double taxation agreement that recognises the amount you paid to the source country and only asks for the difference in tax rates (and the US is lower than Australia so you wouldn't pay anything extra).
