I've also lived there - lived across from UNAM a few years ago. I got heavily involved in the local circus community, massively improved my Spanish, and loved it.

Hmm - I loved living near Coyoacan. It's a bit further from the traditional expat areas, but very artsy - it's where Frida Kahlo lived. Would definitely spend some time wandering there.
