The following may seem like a ridiculous extrapolation but if equality is to be a value, it must be a terminal value. If it is not a terminal value, then it will fail entirely, for hierarchy will creep in, and if you give it an inch it will take a mile

What if the successful deserve success? What if suffering is necessary, natural, and good? What if instability is the only way we grow?

HP, I also think you are presenting a strawman here. Sure, some on the left probably claim they want "equality" in the sense that you are critiquing. But I don't think this is the sort of equality the "left" (whatever that is) desires. It's more of an "equity." +

Emancipation is more of an equal access to opportunity, particularly the opportunity to decide on what "success" looks like. Emancipation does not hold sameness as the goal, it holds diversity as the always already fact of the matter that is negated through oppression...+

Every form of equality is an isotope of totalitarian equality. How to achieve equal opportunity? You would have to implement full communism and even then some people would have better parents than others. And some are tall and some are short, how will you make this fair?
-
Once you start down this road there is no stopping. Every different circumstance becomes an axis of oppression.

I agree with E.O. Wright when he says that emancipatory politics is about all people having “broadly equal acces to the social and material conditions necessary for living a flourishing life.” I don’t want strict equality. And BTW, there is no stopping down any road.
-
All roads are continuous and all will have natural and unintended consequences. The idea behind emancipatory politics is that all will have a say in the process of revising and refining. We co-create the roads.

What is the alternative that you propose?

I don't think people mind the success-to-the-successful feedback spirals as much as they mind being locked out of them, and also that the failure-to-the-failures feedback spirals are brutal. Ideal society => every individual can find success-to-the-successful feedback spirals
