Most people do not think critically about what equality is, or what it must give up to achieve this miracle of “no one standing above me”. It comes with a terrible price

Prestige is just dominance with ideas instead of swords
-
There are feedback loops between weakness in dominance hierarchies and weakness in prestige hierarchies. Leftists often object to this instinctually without being able to articulate it.
-
I think that the success-to-the-successful feedback spirals that intensify inequality in hierarchies tend to be the thing that contributes most to both the instability of the structure and how much suffering the structure causes.
-
What if the successful deserve success? What if suffering is necessary, natural, and good? What if instability is the only way we grow?

HP, I also think you are presenting a strawman here. Sure, some on the left probably claim they want "equality" in the sense that you are critiquing. But I don't think this is the sort of equality the "left" (whatever that is) desires. It's more of an "equity." +

Emancipation is more of an equal access to opportunity, particularly the opportunity to decide on what "success" looks like. Emancipation does not hold sameness as the goal, it holds diversity as the always already fact of the matter that is negated through oppression...+

Every form of equality is an isotope of totalitarian equality. How to achieve equal opportunity? You would have to implement full communism and even then some people would have better parents than others. And some are tall and some are short, how will you make this fair?
-
Once you start down this road there is no stopping. Every different circumstance becomes an axis of oppression.
