A lot of our problems with trust - in relationships, politics, and consensus protocols come from conceptualising it as a binary trust/no trust thing, or a simple spectrum. How I think about trust, a level system:

Do you view these are necessarily built upon each other or could someone (or institution) embody a higher level but fail on a lower level?

I think they mostly build on each other but unorthodox structures are possible. Like, I could imagine someone who loved me still not being very dependable, so I wouldn't trust them to get things done when they said even if I knew they had my best interests at heart.
