Where do legitimacy and authority come from in metamodern OR fluid institutions?

Hmm I'm not sure if I understand your framing. Are you looking for the power model of institutions in a metamodern age? Or the authority and governance structure inside metamodern institutions?
-
Either would be great, thanks

This is a long winded way of saying: People will follow whoever is “better” according to their values.
-
And where do peoples' values come from? How are they shaped by institutions?
-
We might say that values come from the perceived problems that one faces. As long as there are stable problems there will be values. Problems may be considered patterns that are ranked. Values and problems are getting close to the heart of meaning making.

Longevity in the domain and respect/perceived wisdom? I’ve participated in chaordic jiu jitsu institutions for 18 years. Inexperienced people can step up and create new training time/space, but they will naturally step aside to someone that they perceive more experienced.
-
Jiu jitsu is an individual sport, though, where experience is fairly divisible by individuals (e.g. you have more experience than me). What about when that isn't as clear, or when the domain doesn't have such an obvious skill tree (like, I don't know, running a startup maybe?).
-
Startups are very tricky because most people have no idea what they’re doing and don’t have a good way to evaluate other’s competence. Everyone is faking it... I’ll have to think about this one more.
-
This is one reason I prefer revenue-per-employee to top line growth as a primary metric. Either the company must be extraordinarily lucky with its product or the employees actually have to be competently delivering value (or both).
-
You could engineer a fluid corporation on the basis of bonuses being paid based on revenue-per-employee targets. This would allow people to weigh the value of new hires vs slower growth.
