I've been practicing meditation lately. I think a large part of the practice is in training / taming the internal orienting reflex. "Your mind will wander" - due to the orienting reflex firing. "Bring it back" - ignore the reflex. Grow inhibitory neurones in between.

I'm doing a mindfulness based stress reduction course. 8 wks * 2.5hrs/week + daily practice. The orienting reflex is the reflex that orients your attention toward the unexpected / interesting. But it also responds to internal stimuli - "I need milk!" / "I let down my friend", ..

Ive been experimenting and learning about different types. Currently doing open eyes open awareness meditation most days; basically trying to work out if I want to do mantra or samatha (breath-focusing) or something else. Much research.
