Wow @KPShare is the worst. Ok, maybe fighting @CoveredCA for top spot.
Storytime.
I landed in the US a day or so before end of the health insurance enrollment period. I wasn't in any government databases so CoveredCA couldn't verify my identity.
(By the way, in this story when I say 'I spoke to a rep' or 'they said', mentally add 90 minutes on hold to the relevant agency and several days of trying to get up the willpower to brave the fray again.)

I finally submitted my application with Kaiser, just shy of the 60 day deadline. They sent me an email saying 'you have 10 days to submit the documents proving your 'qualifying life event''. I didn't trust that so I sent it immediately. ...Guessing I'll hear back in 10 days.

Weeks go by. I hear nothing. I eventually call Kaiser, and they first take an hour to track down my name in their database. They keep asking if I submitted the application. Eventually they find it. Apparently it got rejected.

Why rejected? Because I didn't add two additional pieces of documentation that WEREN'T mentioned in any of Kaiser or CoveredCA's descriptions. How did I know it was rejected? No call, no email, no letter, no nothing.

I was informed it was too late to apply again. I had to file a complaint with Kaiser, wait 7-10 days to get ACKNOWLEDGEMENT that they had received my application, and 30 days to get a yes or no on whether my complaint was received. And then maybe get to apply for coverage.

And I'm healthy, patient, and can, in a pinch, fly home to Australia. As a contractor there is literally no way I can see right now to BUY PROTECTION against six figure bills if I were to become hospitalised in the US. Sorry America, you're drunk. Go home.

ARGHHHHH! If you've read this far, thank you for reading my rant. I feel better having yelled into the void.
