I bet you'd get good answers from /r/slatestarcodex if you're willing to crosspost

Would something like Eugene Odum's diagrams be in the ballpark? I'm about to board a plane, but can talk/write more later - I used to be in ecology!pic.twitter.com/wqktY1KOQ0

Whoa this is cool. What subject area is this called?
-
Systems ecology: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Systems_ecology … The image I posted is a kind of Sankey diagram, and there's another kind of ecological flow map you might find interesting - Odum diagrams, named for Eugene's brother Howard

Fascinating, thank you!

Within organisms tends to be modelled as continuous functions rather than transactions. And the topic to study is called metabolism. Ecosystem level is more like a series of discrete events (eating) so transactional thinking may work better there.

I would read Nick Lane’s books, all masterpieces in my opinion.

I enjoyed learning about Ruyer https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymond_Ruyer … in a chapter by Grosz http://a.co/3Kf8vjx his embryology was one of the ways I learned to move from chicken/egg questions back to econ implications—to remember that they’re not so separate—to ask my own questions of bio.
