A thing that is related and might get worse - anonymity or pseudonymity lets individuals and organizations avoid accountability for the truthfulness and openness of their statements. Not the entire problem...

Polarization also seems like a lack of collective vision/feeling, and breaking groups up into distributed communities might mean that big collective concepts like 'America' can't compete with smaller, more reasonable ones.
