The fear-mongering over HRT is just transphobia. Doctors will throw fistfuls of hormone meds at cis patients. It's only when the patient is trans that suddenly HRT becomes dangerous. The danger isn't to trans people's bodies but to cis people's assumptions and worldview.

Trans kids whose parents won't support their transition should absolutely do DIY HRT behind their parents' backs, and trans adults should help those kids do it. The only people who are abusing the kids in that scenario are the transphobic parents.

When judged by any commonly accepted standard of care, medical gender transition has spectacularly, unprecedentedly high success rates and low regret rates. But cis people ignore that data because they see a trans person transitioning as a failure to turn that person cis.

When trans people medically transition we reveal that the supposedly solid walls between "biological sexes" are actually at best thin membranes and quite permeable and the implications of that terrify cis people and cis doctors who provide transition care are no exception.

The history of trans healthcare is an infuriating history of cis doctors gatekeeping trans people from transition care for arbitrary reasons that had nothing to do with those trans people not "really" being trans and everything to do with those cis doctors' own anxieties.

Trans people don't owe cis doctors honesty or trust or deference. Trans people have endured decades of abuse and gaslighting from cis doctors. If they want our trust they have to earn it. They have to repent and make reparations.

It's OK for trans patients to lie to their doctors. Lie about how much medication you have left so you can have reserves. Tell them the blood work is in the middle of your injection cycle when it's at the end so they can't keep your hormone levels unnecessarily low.

Transition healthcare shouldn't be gatekept by cis people in the first place. If cis doctors don't want an adversarial and deceitful relationship with their trans patients then they shouldn't declare themselves the supreme arbiters of our transitions.
