you want some good news from 2018? I bet you do • book sales are up this year over last year • sales of physical books have grown every year since 2013 • indie bookstores have increased by 35 percent in the past decade reading isn’t dying, it’s *thriving.* happy new year.

Totally agree! I wrote a blog post titled “Why Kindle is superior to the paperback” in an attempt to bring people’s attention to the fact it makes reading so much more accessible to many people. Something many don’t realise. Dyslexic? Large print? Arthritis/dexterity problems etc

kindles are so useful if you happen to be the type of person who carries a stack of books everywhere and walks a lot

Okay wow. Is this when I can plug something? I have a twitter for accessibility in podcasting where I highlight audiodramas (and others) that have transcripts. If you're interested, go check out

I work for a part rural library sys now & its taught me how important ebooks are! We have a lot of homebound patrons & little public transit so a lot of people you wouldnt think'd go for ebooks do. Giving ereader tech support over the phone to those patrons is tough but rewarding

Like I have had several people specifically say if it wasnt for the library offering ebooks they wouldn't have access to books at all. It's what pushes me to make sure those calls wrap up a success even if they can take an hour.

Books in any format are a wonderful thing. It's awesome that ebooks have increased accessibility, though.

Yes, and let's not forget how e-books (and book piracy, no matter what your ethical position on it is) gave access to millions of readers on the peripheries of the world, whose funds/physical access to reading materials may be more limited!

Thank you. Low vision book readers used to cost close to a thousand bucks and were big and cumbersome. Only certain books were printed in large print. Now every person with a phone, a computer, or a table can blow the print of any book up HUGE, flip the page to white on black...

Agreed. My dyslexic husband perfers audio books and I perfer e-books during migraines and vertigo spells, because I can control the font size and spacing

Great comment. Because of my muscle disorder, I read ebooks in bed. I just can’t hold up print books.

My father who is blind reads multiple books a week via free books on tape he gets through the mail and now uses Audible via Echo to get books he wouldn't normally be able to. All forms of reading should be encouraged.

Yeah the amount of hate for ebooks in late 2018 is weird to me. It’s a novel either way, isn’t it?

Also cheaper once you have the device. I love that I can increase the size and read it without my glasses.

I'm disabled and only read printed books, but that's just me. This past year has taught me the importance of e-books as far as accessibility is concerned and I'm glad they're around for people that need them. I'm glad we live in a world where we can have both.

Thank you for saying this. I too love printed books, but with R/A, it's easier to use a kindle for the bulk of my reading. And if you use library ebooks, it still contributes to sales!

I agree 100%. I think the book market needs both types of books to continue to grow and thrive. I personally can't reed ebooks due to a disability, but I think they really made books accessible to so many more people once they started coming out.
