We are running a small experiment where 0.3% of viewers will see an auto-generated thumbnail, instead of your custom thumbnail. We are not removing the ability to create your custom thumbnail, but we hope to gain insights on auto-generated thumbnails for the future.

Finding out about stuff like this through Twitter replies is ridiculous YouTube. You are taking away a very important aspect of our creativity. I love making my own thumbnails. Give channels a heads up and an option to opt out.

That or why override our custom ones when there are thousands of people who don't make custom thumbnails

Exactly! Experiment on someone who could use it, not suppress the creativity of people that make their own

No that wouldn't work, if they want to AB test their thumbnails vs custom ones, they can only do that test on people with custom thumbnails... Companies need to test things, and they are only doing it on 0.3% of the users -- the impact will be negligible.

Regardless on how "negligible" it may be, it should still be something you can opt out of. Its censorship no matter what % it is. I'd be furious if this was happening to me.

Sorry, I know you all are concerned and such, but the only issue I see here, is that youtube actually decided to SAY they were doing it, like everyone keeps asking. Companies do AB testing constantly, and often way more than .3% of the users are involved.2 replies 0 retweets 7 likes -

Even if every single one of those .3% of the users actually decide not to click on the video because they didn't see the usual thumbnail, that's still .3% earnings -- and that won't be the case either way.

"We are doing a test that could improve user interaction with videos, and in the worst case, it's only .3% impact and will be over within a few days." sounds pretty reasonable to me, and youtube actually communicated about this test, instead of leaving people wondering.

You still never know what that ‘negligible’ amount can mean for various users. All the more reason their behaviour should not be defended.
