I will say that I've found a lot of gem extension compilation errors on macOS are due to homebrew gcc being linked. So `brew unlink gcc` is part of my mental checklist when something goes wrong.
Homebrew has been cause of so much frustration in the past. Concept is good, but the quality of the recipes is clearly not consistent. Also the ability to install older versions is a bit weak. And, macOS updates keep breaking Homebrew from time to time.

Frustrating experiences with Homebrew on macOS caused me to move to a Linux desktop, but that had own issues with graphics card and computer stability, etc. Nothing seems to be perfect. Virtual machines are also slow.
