For those that didn't see or hear: GDQ had setup a station where you could sit down and see some live runs right near the entrance to the expo hall, adjacent to the food court (perfect placement, really).

They also had a wonderful system where you could practice some speedrunning challenges at one of 4-5 stations that would automatically time you and give you feedback (session PB, par time, best time ever at that station) for four games, depending on the day.

From 3-7pm each day, the stage was reserved for people to come up and try their hand at the gauntlet, running the four challenges back to back to set a time on the leaderboard. Try as many times as you like, go back to practice if you need, just gotta stand in a short line.

This was commentated by familiar faces from GDQ, there was an audience watching it all happen, the screen displayed splits that compared you against par times and the current #1 on the leaderboard. All combined, it was fun to watch, and thrilling to participate in.

The barrier to entry was so low (a few 10 minute rounds at the practice stations were all that was needed to learn the games), and the challenges were varied enough that nobody had a clear advantage. It was compelling content for everybody involved.

If I had never seen speedrunning before, or had only spectated it, I would have been called to action for sure. "Look how easy it is to speedrun!" the whole setup calls out. I ended up being so engrossed that I barely walked the floor on Saturday. I spent most of my day at GDQ.

The system was built by
@TheOmnigamer and the production was maintained by all of the hardworking staff that attended PAX. This sort of system would be so fantastic actually *at* a GDQ event, perhaps with something like 10 mini challenges instead of 4, left to run unmanned even.Show this thread -
In short, thanks to
@GamesDoneQuick for producing an event/activity that will certain go down as one of my favorite speedrunning memories, full stop. It really was *that* good!Show this thread

I felt like it was a very good spot and setup for the short notice they got. The mini-challenge they had I felt was great idea for people who aren't speedrunners or ever tried it before.
