I've seen these screenshots and recitations. It's not good enough. I would really urge someone like a @bibekdebroy to weigh in. He's a well-known Sankritist and probably can do a credible translation.

No worries. I just read your translation and Goldman/Pollock which she shared. Both rather similar. Sita clearly critical of Rama for not having faith in her. Would you agree that matches the sense of Valmiki’s Sanskrit text?

Clearly she didn't say that+ @AudreyTruschke claims it's colloquial and not literal translation of what she's getting at. That appears to be what's in dispute. It's her interpretation of what Sita feeling as she utters these measured regal words that nonetheless reveal her pain.

There is no question of interpretation here. Is the word pig used? No. The word "know" is used in a certain sense in the Bible. Am I at liberty to replace it with the F-word and say it is my interpretation? I don't think so.

Rupa, if @AudreyTruschke says she's writing fiction, it's a different matter; She can let her imagination run wild. But if she claims to be a 'scholar', then she can't be so blase. Which begs the question: How fictional or 'imaginative' is her so-called scholarly work?

No connection here. The one and only one mistake she made was to use the term "loose translation" rather than "here's my interpretation using colloquial language of today".Much like a prof illustrating using colloquial lang what Hamlet is really getting athttps://twitter.com/rupasubramanya/status/987987787780632576 …

Mistake by @AudreyTruschke :calling it translation when clearly not.Had she called it her "interpretation"of real meaning of that text in colloquial lang, then would have been more accurate. If someone wants to loosely interpret text in the Bible & wants to use the F word, why not?

Writing a gloss or interpretation very much means using your own words and many professors teaching works in classical languages or hard to read for present generation will engage in this kind of exercise. Perfectly legit academic activity.

That Sita was critical of Ram was never in question. That aspect is a huge part of the epic. Would Valmiki have had Sita use the words "misogynistic pig" in his narration? Audrey being a scholar would certainly know that's not so. She used her FOE for loose translation here.
