There are a large number of Ramayana versions all over India, which vary from the North Indian standard. There are wellknown differences between Valmiki and Tulsidas. There are differences in how women interpret the Ramayana. But boys fight over Columbia vs Rutgers.https://twitter.com/saliltripathi/status/987377019003555840 …

I did. And I think Rama is strong enough not to need human beings to defend him. I may not agree with her. But she has the right to say what she feels.

I myself have written a version based on the feminist Adbhut Ramayan. My objection is to a racist deliberately mistranslating the Valmiki Ramayan on Lord Ram. She may have a right to do what she wants; And we have a right to criticise that racist.

Definitely. But childish in the extreme to make it some silly fight between American universities. Also there are versions in India which are critical of Lord Ram, even as Maryada Purshottam. Fight with scholarship, not by showing off about some school you went to.

I don't come from an elite family. Don't know American universities. But I do know my culture. There is no concept like blasphemy in the Vedic way. We are encouraged to question. I do that too. Publicly. But at the same time, I will defend my culture from some racist bigot.

Khik khik. I'm wondering if it's possible to critise what's been said of Ram without attacking "that racist" "bigot". Or is it too unfashionable?

The beauty of our epics is that they showed every person is fallible, no matter how great he is. Ram was so upright that he himself went to the forest for 14 years during the prime of his life just because his father said so. It's not like he applied all the rules to his wife.

But Ram's flaw was that he was a conservative and that's why he asked SITA to go through the agnipariksha. Ramayana teaches us what he should not have done.

You are absolutely right, Amish, and in no version does Sita call Ram a "misogynist pig". This would be considered hate speech in every academic and non-academic understanding of way culture is to be regarded.

Can u ask truschke about the misogyny of Jesus when he sired a child with #MaryMagdalene ? Or for that matter how Mohammad made woman sex slaves? But of all great Misogynists in history she picks our #Ram the epitome of humanity and calls him a Pig via sita? Irony
