$40 is totally doable if you prioritise. Like, do you want a safe bed in a hostel dorm, or bus money for job seeking? Yesterday's bread for breakfast AND dinner, or a box of tampons? Honestly, it's perfectly easy to scrape a tenuous, degrading existence on $40 per day.

The big problem is that it’s not just for a day or two! People have to live like this sometimes for years! So inappropriate & degrading! Cheapskate LNP put $$$$$$ before people! Enough already!

Yeah, I can spend less than $40 a day. With food in my fridge and a job that earns.

Average Australians are unemployed? Less than 5.5% of the population is unemployed. That's not average.

What are the statistics for the underemployed? If you work just one hour a week, you are no longer considered unemployed

Dole was never meant as living wage. If you want to help unemployed, find them jobs not give them more money to kill their incentive to look for work. This is not being cruel but being realistic and really caring for the unemployed. @billshortenmp @Bowenchris @TurnbullMalcolm

Not if you're a woman in her early 60's. Too young for pension and too old for most employers. Women in their late 50's or early 60's are in deep trouble if they have no other option than Newstart

The best way to help anyone at anytime is find them employment. I understand that for certain age groups it is harder to find employment. Nevertheless it would be far more beneficial if the governments concentrated on ensuring employment for everyone rather than the dole.

There are less jobs than people. It doesn't take a genius to work out some people will have to be unemployed. Punishing people for unemployment assumes they wouldn't take a job if they could get one. Being on the dole is already degrading.

Daniel, I never said that it is always easy to find a job. I only said to the governments of both persuasions; 'If you want to help unemployed - find them a job. Have I said anything wrong?

No, absolutely not. I agree for the most part. The dole should be less than baseline salary, but it must be livable, and I mean long term livable. I know other engineers who got hit hard by the downturn and were unemployed for 6 months or more.

It is definitely something wrong with our economy and our employment services if people with your qualifications and your background have difficulties finding employment. Try different employment agencies. @TurnbullMalcolm @billshortenmp @SenatorCash
