For those that only read the headline:"The survey also found that most participants did not know the significance of January 26 as the date the First Fleet of British ships landed at Sydney Cove in 1788, and most were unaware of controversy over calls for the date to be changed."

Had the British not been there the French ships would of sailed in. Found a land rich in indiginous people. Put them in ball and chain to sell as slaves. France were very active slave traders at that time.

1860 france ended slavery. The last in Europe to do so. Britain still traded slaves but nowhere near as much. It was coming to an end.

I'm pleased for you, history is great, especially when it focuses on what happened versus what didn't. Also good to know that the British were slightly nicer slave traders than the French at that point!

The anglo french war is a good read. You probably never heard of it. Look it up.

Yeah but tbh the 78-83 stoush doesn't make it into my all time top 5 Anglo-French wars, especially if you include the Napoleonic wars (which we shouldn't right, given they involved all the major European powers). Too many to choose from

Great article, a refugee and migrant program is only made possible through the unification of australia as one modern, free, welcoming nation which all began Jan 26 with Arthur Phillips.

I’m a migrant and value “Australia Day”, but if it‘s memory hurts the oldest Australians, I rather have it on another day that we ALL celebrate harmony and peace.

As an immigrant I see Oz day as a day to recognise the wrongs done to Aboriginal but adopt & treasure all the good & knowledge of their culture to move forward together
