Gov’ts privatizing utilities has led to horrendous increases in the cost of basic services. Many unfortunate ppl struggle to pay for electricity & gas, but the private companies providing the services keep ramping up charges

No doubt there’s pressure from utilities lifting prices, but the real cost of living pressure is caused by everyone wanting to live in Melbourne or Sydney. Decentralise govt jobs and incentivise private industry to go rural and it will ease.

Imagine what will happen when mortgage interest rates rise - huge number of foreclosures will happen, making the situation worse

No doubt, that’s why it’s hard to imagine much movement upwards in rates in the short to medium term.

It will happen and it will not be a pretty sight. This is what happens when you have low interest rates for too long and local & overseas investors bidding up prices

Rates may have to rise, but with how tightly strung people are mortgage wise, just a quarter of % rise will have a huge effect.

If you have a $600k mortgage, each 1% increase adds $500 to monthly repayments #ouch

My point is that only 25 basis points would be required at any time. If you added 1% to everyone’s current mortgage it would cause a recession that would make Keating’s early 90’s recession look like party time.

Australian politics past decade (2007 - 2017), shown lack of bi-partisanship co-operation, federal government debts increased beyond A $ 532+ Billion and not a lot to show for it, continuing politicking, lack budget repair, lack political leadership and future country prosperity.

Any economist will tell you our avge incomes became hyper-inflated during our extensive commodities boom. This overhang is being gradually reeled in and we will see real wage increases starting later this year. It’s not this govt’s fault but that’s an unfashionable thing to say.
