Peak nanny state. This unAustralian “gotcha” culture’s been years growing - I recall a newspaper once demanding fines over Bob Hawke not doing up his seatbelt in a ComCar. If there really are officials with resources to spare to “investigate” this, someone’s funding should be cut

So when a person in authority does something wrong, and someone notices, it is of more significance that the observer can be said to be playing "gotcha", than that a law has been broken by someone who ought to set a good example. OK

Describe the actual “wrong” committed by a 63 year old harbourfront gent enjoying a short tool around, close to a jetty, in an inflatable w/out wearing (drumroll) a buoyancy device? The same “wrong” is committed by thousands each weekend along every coast. Some perspective needed

3 Safety laws exist to save lives. The attitude that it is ok for some to flaunt them will not save a single life. A public figure is a role model. The idea that it must be proved that unsafe is "wrong" is to confuse ethics with practicability.

Got it John, your view’s that minor and/or harmless infractions of rules, even those widely ignored in practice, should still be punished & zealously so where the party concerned is a public figure. Perfectly respectable view, I happen to think it’s nannying. Agree to disagree.

And set a better example. But hang on, he's an IPA/liar and as such can flout any old law he likes. Silly me, thinking he's supposed to obey the law.

Lucky 🎩is not on #newstart, that would be more than a weeks income. If the punishment was truly equal #Turnbull's fine would $10,151 - if we added investment income and the rest it is possibly closer to $100k. But hey, why should things be #fair? #auspol

Nanny State nonsense really - what’s next, life jacket whilst swimming, surfing, etc.? I’d be more concerned that he doesn’t appear to have the outboard cut out lanyard clipped to himself - but I assume that’s not against the law so not unsafe.

Indeed. Wearing seat belts, air bags in cars, forcing children to sit in car seats with seat belts instead of letting them roam all over the car while it's in motion, wearing safety harnesses in dangerous occupations, leaping out of planes without a parachute. Nanny state crap!

Staying with the water safety issue can someone please advise me why the law says one of these activities requires the wearing of a life jacket and the other doesn’t? Oh and by the way, @TurnbullMalcolm would not have broken the law in WA.pic.twitter.com/PvmB7KGkiQ
