The Anet firings are infuriating, and now I'm seeing--from some of my own followers--lots of uncritical "Well, why shouldn't they lose their jobs for being rude to customers?"

Also to be ultra clear: their firings are bullshit, and this whole thing is an illustration of how at-will labor laws hurt workers.

Two more things here: 1. My heart goes out to Anet and NCSoft employees, who now know that the company will cut them out if fan pressure gets to high. 2. https://www.gameworkersunite.org/

We give companies more leeway than the people who work for them. When one employee fucks up they get fired, when the company fucks up we get a 'we're listening' statement.

I was gonna' say this same thing. People who work in service industries and retail have very limited career progression opportunities. Because society devalues their labor companies are allowed to treat them like shit with little recourse.

It’s like the first time I had a job with a real Human Resources department. Every shitty corporate I’d had up to that point, if the phrase “HR is getting involved” was used, that meant someone was getting fired.
