The Anet firings are infuriating, and now I'm seeing--from some of my own followers--lots of uncritical "Well, why shouldn't they lose their jobs for being rude to customers?"

The people who have asked me "why shouldn't they have been fired" aren't aiming for malice, but there is a cruelty of indifference there, and a failure to imagine a world beyond the most punitive of responses, and a deeply limited understanding of what careers can be.

A career is about growth, and growth comes through practice, negotiation, mentoring, and occasionally, yes, someone putting you back onto the right track when you fuck up. Careers are dynamic. But for a lot of people, it's as if only two static states exist: Employed or fired.

We give companies more leeway than the people who work for them. When one employee fucks up they get fired, when the company fucks up we get a 'we're listening' statement.

I was gonna' say this same thing. People who work in service industries and retail have very limited career progression opportunities. Because society devalues their labor companies are allowed to treat them like shit with little recourse.

It’s like the first time I had a job with a real Human Resources department. Every shitty corporate I’d had up to that point, if the phrase “HR is getting involved” was used, that meant someone was getting fired.
