But maybe the most frustrating thing I'm seeing from "well meaning" folks in general is a failure to consider steps to take when disciplining an employee that aren't /firing someone./

The people who have asked me "why shouldn't they have been fired" aren't aiming for malice, but there is a cruelty of indifference there, and a failure to imagine a world beyond the most punitive of responses, and a deeply limited understanding of what careers can be.

A career is about growth, and growth comes through practice, negotiation, mentoring, and occasionally, yes, someone putting you back onto the right track when you fuck up. Careers are dynamic. But for a lot of people, it's as if only two static states exist: Employed or fired.

Also to be ultra clear: their firings are bullshit, and this whole thing is an illustration of how at-will labor laws hurt workers.
