Thinking a lot about what “retro” means, related to games. So many 8- or 16-bit games are coming out now, the word “retro” sort of starts seeming like a misnomer.
For me, “retro” in this context is obviously purely aesthetic, with some minor (obviously there are exceptions) roots in gameplay and literal function.

I think “retro” gaming has started evolving to be something new. And the idea of it being anchored/defined by what a system is capable of seems to miss the point.

Because yeah, all these new side-scrollers with 8- or 16-bit graphics certainly LOOK like “retro” games. But let me tell you, they do not necessarily play like them. Some do, sure.

When do they cease being throwbacks, and just start being new entries in an art form? Not attacking or defending one side or the other. Genuinely curious about our classifications of art.
