Sources tell me this is the girl who was shot in the head and killed by a Border Patrol agent today near Laredo, Texas. She was from Guatemala and had just crossed. She was unarmed. Her shooting was captured on Facebook Live.pic.twitter.com/i7L8j8tFUq

I'll share her name tomorrow; I didn't post her age because that seems very unclear at the moment. I'm sure we'll all learn more about this in the days to come. For now, please consider this:

This young woman had friends and family in Guatemala and in the U.S. So there's a digital mourning happening among people who know they can't be reunited in their grief. The same border where she died is the same border that physically disconnects this community.

Part of the reason newsrooms need to diversify is so they can have reporters who understand the nuances of this kind of situation and aren't crashing deadline trying to figure some basic cultural things out. I know we're getting there, but sometimes it doesn't feel fast enough.

The only way to fix it is to build a wall so illegals don't cross. That way nobody gets hurt – at North Seal Beach Center

To MAGA folk on thread: learn some history & law. Borders don't serve anyone except those in power. Which ain't you either btw. Crossing a border isn't automatically an illegal act, federal agents can't operate "weapons free." US created the situation in Guatemala 30+yrs ago

Crossing a sovereign country's border without going through said country's checkpoints and obtaining clearance for entry actually is illegal no matter how much u ideologically don't want it to be. Also the officer didn't fire "freely". Fired once when group rushed. Facts>feelings

There's a large body of US & international law on these matters and it's not illegal in all cases. Fleeing from police isn't grounds to shoot. I'll also repeat what I said: even legality != Justice.

If you really feel this way, you should self deport - the First Nations treaties with the US federal govt mean you're probably on stolen sovereign territory. And the US has interfered in the sovereign affairs of Guatamala for 30+ yrs. So who's soverignty are we talking about?

Maybe the United States of America should not have overthrown Guatemala's govt & funded a 36-year war that resulted in 200,000 indigenous people being murdered & having their way of life destroyed. Maybe learn U.S. history.

What an idiotic statement. In fact, I do help immigrants. I volunteer. I traveled to Guatemala as part of a U.N. human rights watch delegation. I teach English. Read a history book. You're an embarrassing example of willfgul ignorance in the U.S.
