I'll share her name tomorrow; I didn't post her age because that seems very unclear at the moment. I'm sure we'll all learn more about this in the days to come. For now, please consider this:

This young woman had friends and family in Guatemala and in the U.S. So there's a digital mourning happening among people who know they can't be reunited in their grief. The same border where she died is the same border that physically disconnects this community.

Part of the reason newsrooms need to diversify is so they can have reporters who understand the nuances of this kind of situation and aren't crashing deadline trying to figure some basic cultural things out. I know we're getting there, but sometimes it doesn't feel fast enough.

I've been in touch with her aunt, who tells me Claudia Gómez González turned 20 in February. And yes, Claudia was indigenous. Her entire family speaks Mam.

Corrections for my initial tweet: Claudia was killed on Wednesday, not Thursday. The Facebook Live video shows the aftermath, not the shooting itself. I regret getting these things wrong. Everything else I shared stands.

This is Claudia's mom, Lidia González Vásquez, in Guatemala. All she wants is her daughter's body back. I've been investigating how long it takes for family members south of the border to get their loved ones' remains. It's a complicated process that can take up to a year.pic.twitter.com/xtQ3udPVNi

Do we know how old she was?
-
I'm not sure. Every photo I've seen of her looks like she's in her early teens -- but a couple of people tell me she may have been as old as 20.
-
Then wouldn't that make her a grown woman? The picture you used is her younger. It makes people think Border Patrol shot a young girl instead of a woman.
-
This is a recent photo. I’ve seen several others, all taken over the last year. She looks very young in all of them. That said: I reject the implication that I cherrypicked a particular photo in order to deceive anyone. Please find somewhere else to misplace a conspiracy theory.
-
A young girl or a young woman doesn't matter. Her being shot does matter.

Are you sure about the facebook post? This is the article from the NYtimeshttps://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/24/us/border-patrol-shooting-woman.html …
-
No, I'm not. I know the post has been shared all day, but I haven't watched it and it's unlikely that I will. If the NYT says it's the aftermath of the shooting, then I'd say that's correct.
-
Saw some footage on the local news station too and it said aftermath. Still this totally sucks!

Patricia Gomez Gonzalez.
-
Not her full name, but close. She was also known to several people by a nickname.
-
Claudia first name I believe
-
That is correct, her name was Claudia Patricia Gómez González and she was 20 years old. This link is from a journal from Guatemala and tells her story:http://www.soy502.com/articulo/claudia-guatemalteca-murio-intentando-cumplir-sueno-50172 …
