Regardless of whether the person goes through with the call, the threat to do so is an exercise in power. It’s an affirmative claim to (and an explicit reminder of) a humanity that people of color do not posses. It’s serious. It’s traumatizing. But it’s also difficult to name.

I’m Black & from Louisiana. I mostly grew up in & now live in Texas & I’ve been pulled over 3 times since Trump has been in office and asked about my green card and visa. I had to check a lady for making a snide remark about calling ICE under her breath.

Like this guy today accusing me of being here illegally and calling me a tick on a dog? https://twitter.com/prernaplal/status/996922066535305216 …. As if we all don't see the racism at play here.

I'm a white Canadian, who easily passes as a US Citizen (I have a green card). I do my best to call people on their racist rants about immigrants by catching them by surprise when I reveal my status. I can't imagine how horrible a threat of deportation feels.
-
It's only a threat if you are illegal! Illegal: a person present in a country without official authorization.

in case you are unclear of the meaning of illegal. -
Any immigrant can be deported for a (minor) crime or not renewing paperwork. The original tweet was calling attention to how white Americans threaten brown people with deportation as a way to assert control even when those brown people could be natural born citizens.
