Tucker is apparently not very familiar with international human rights treaties. Suspending, amending or repealing a domestic refugee law doesn’t magically get the United States out of the international conventions it’s already ratified.https://twitter.com/corsairstw/status/990615965317718016 …
Perhaps you have assumptions on asylum. Perhaps you don’t. Let’s start here: Do you know the difference between refugees and asylees? Did you know about the 1980 before you saw me tweet about it? Do you understand what an international treaty is?

If you already know this, then let’s keep the thread going. If not, I suggest you start with a website called Google and then read a few books. We can return to this conversation once you know the basics.

It’s definitely an interesting topic! Might be the defining topic of our era.

You tweeted earlier that “anyone can show up and claim refugee status.” That’s not how it works. Refugees are people who are outside the United States. Asylum-seekers are those who are already on US soil.
-
I just gave you one really easy explanation. Once you understand more about refugees, asylum-seekers, domestic laws and international treaties, we can have more of a conversation about this. Good luck.

Appreciate the insight. Have a nice day!

The only law that has precedent in the US is US law. We could choose to ignore international treaties at any time - we ignored UN policy when bombing Syria recently. From my understanding if someone shows up and says they are being persecuted in their home we must take them. No?
