I know the US is supposed to be the most advanced country and stuff but in most (all?) of Latin America, there’s a thing called habeas data; latin for “you have the data.” We are *so* far behind on this in concept and in practice.

Habeas data assumes that you yourself own your own data. Forget the practice — the concept itself is novel to so many people in the US.

Each country does it differently, but under habeas data in some Latin American countries, a politician better not text you to urge you to vote unless you explicitly invited them to do so. The assumption is that you own your data; that includes phone numbers and email addresses.

Since the assumption under habeas data is that you own all your data, you can compel any entity you believe has data about you to share with you what they have. And you have the right compel any entity to destroy said data as soon as you ask them to do so.
