Many reporters have referred to the caravan as “illegal immigrants.” The people on the caravan aren’t yet immigrants here because they’re not even in the country yet. Plus, there’s nothing illegal about claiming asylum at a port of entry when they arrive.

There’s been some surprise on the part of some reporters that there’s a caravan. But this caravan crosses once a year. It’s not new. There’s also some surprise that people ask for asylum at ports of entry. There’s also nothing new about that.

Once the caravan arrives at a port of entry, it’s a civil, not criminal matter. That immigration is a civil matter is a very simple matter of fact, but still surprises too many people.
