Lots of confusion about DACA again. Here’s the short of it: while it’s true there’s no “DACA deal,” the program already exists and can’t be undone. Just ask President Trump, who tried to take DACA away last year. He failed.

Last year, Trump ordered an end to DACA. It didn’t quite work out for him. In February, the Supreme Court declined the opportunity to hear the administration’s case on DACA. Remember Trump’s March 5 DACA deadline? It wasn’t a deadline. It wasn’t anything. The program continued.

What *has* changed is that the DACA program isn’t accepting new applicants. It currently only serves people who applied and maintained DACA during the initial five-year window of time; these recipients can renew DACA every two years. It’s expensive; there’s no fee waiver.

Trump can make up DACA deadlines and he can make up DACA deals all he wants. But just like there was no DACA deadline on March 5, there is no DACA deal now that will magically make the policy disappear. No tweet or posturing can take DACA away for the people who benefit from it.
