When Jeff Sessions came after California's SB 54, the so-called sanctuary state bill, he did so in a very limited way. He only went after three provisions in the law. He left 18 of the other provisions, include the one on ICE detainers, untouched.

The state sanctuary law doesn't only bar ICE detainers from being honored in the state. It also prohibits local and state law enforcement officers from inquiring about an individual's status. Jeff Sessions didn't even touch that.

I asked the DOJ why Sessions went after California's refusal to honor ICE detainers in his *speech*, but not in his *lawsuit*. The got back to me; so did one of the people who helped draft SB 54.
