Often I feel that Latinx is as ridiculous an identity as the former British colonies forming together to make a cultural identity. Latinidad, at its core, is the countries' shared history of Iberian colonialism.

I also say so because of the historical cantankerousness between many of these nations, i.e. everybody back home don't like nobody else really. But once it's presented in a US context, everyone's the same

this also collapses very important nuances--how is a Costa Rican privileged over a Nicaraguan in the US? A Mexican over a Guatemalan, etc? When everyone's Latino, Argentines & Dominicans are considered the same, but they're two entirely different cultures

it also really helps gloss over the need to continue the important conversation of how race is dealt with in Latin America. There's entirely no way an indigenous Peruvian is treated globally as a blonde-haired Uruguayan. Context is lost with 'Latino'

how do other people feel? Caribbeans, Central Americans, indigenous, afro-descendant people of the community? how has Latino/Latin/Latinx affected you?

You're completely right. Those important markers that distinguish us get lost. But, largely because of the history of this country and the way it's grappled with identity and citizenship, we still need a descriptor for those of us who descend from people south of the border.

i see where you're coming from--there's refuge within a word, an identity--it makes us feel safe, seen, accepted. i think as a community, the conversation hasn't been delved in deep enough
