      It's pronounced Latinx. A thread.

Years ago I saw words written as Latin@ and amig@s; did that simply fall out of favor?

Some people still prefer it, and there are some university departments that I think still use those spellings ;)

I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE MOST WONDERFUL WAY. Language nerd coming through...the @ symbol is now an acceptable replacement for that?? Are...are we *allowed* to do that?? Can we use that as a gender? I'm GenderFluid and... O (for other) looks too much like 0 to me.pic.twitter.com/l8kCkPqMCy

I guess on second thought, it might only apply to people whose languages define gendered words by o/a since the @ symbol combines both letters... like the ; is a combination of : and , right?

Yes; it would fail horribly in French. A later reply says people also use "e" instead of either "o" or "a", which solves the problem nicely and doesn't produce pronunciation problems.

Or unless people pronounce @ like "e" with the understanding that it's meant to include non-binary, trans and genderfluid, etc... I mean, it's good to know they had a gender flexible option all along, I suppose, but.

I remember reading it a lot and never being sure how to pronounce it. On the one hand it's great that the word shifted to a more parsable one and gained widespread usage. But, linguist nerd me is sad that a non-alphabetic character couldn't stick its way into the lexicon.
