I think it’s definitely a thing that could be adopted by other languages that are gendered. I speak Bulgarian, and the same thing happens. Group of male friends = priyateli , female friends = priyatelki... but a mixed group just uses the ‘priyateli’ again. Whut?

People have started to address it in French, but the way that's catching on has unfortunately been super clumsy: instead of amis (m) or amies (f), the gn way is ami.ie.s, which is hard to pronounce. The -x ending in Spanish seems a much more elegant solution amixs.
