So it sounds like latin-equis or latin-ex?

I say it like "latin-ex" mostly. In casual use, some of my friends (also latinx) prounce it like "la-tinks" (rhymes with "lynx")

Sorry if this is obvious -- should the first two syllables sound like the beginning of Latino/Latina or like the dead language?

Please don’t apologize! I welcome questions, disagreements, dialogue on this :) I stress the 2° syllable; so do most people I know (it’s a holdover from the way we, as a rule, stress the 2° syllable in three-syllable words in Spanish). But I’ve also heard people stress the 1°.

I tend to use that word in Spanish and pronounce it "a-MEE-ges," which is how I first heard it.

Because that’s not how the letter e is pronounced in spanish.

This is a good question, Stefan! Some people do, in fact, spell it that was in Spanish. It’s just that I personally have seen amigxs a lot longer in Spanish (and in Portuguese, which I’m not getting into for now).

I've always seen it written as "amigxs" or "amig@s" but it is usually pronounced "amigues" (the u is there for phonetical reasons, so that the g sounds the same). That x is very difficult to pronounce.

yeah I couldn't find any other Spanish words where x is pronounced like ue in Spanish or e in English so it seems like a whole new interpretation is needed for latinx/amigxs to catch on...

Hmm. So, there are *lots* of pronunciations for x; as a Spanish language speaker I’m letting you know that a lot of Spanish language speakers who do use the word and pronounce it as “ah-MEE-guess.”

Same... la-TEEN-ex, and I say the “la” with the same “a” as “ma” or “pa” (not the same “a” as, for example, “last”)

That is very interesting, mad at myself for not noticing that, although why would I when my hs Spanish classes were a joke. Interestingly the usual problem pronouncing Japanese words by Americans is that they often stress none of the syllables. Ask an American to say Hiroshima.

A video/recording of the correct way to pronounce latinx would be helpful. I always read it in english as "lah-tinks" which I KNOW is 100% wrong, but my hazy memory of high school spanish just starts smoking and sparking and saying "does not compute." :(
