Someone should make a map of greater LA’s all-white strongholds and overlay it with where we’ve seen massive fires in the past few decades. My guess is they’d often match perfectly.

Black/latinx people were needed for service work in Monrovia but only were allowed to live in the southeast part of town. They were forbidden from being closer to nature, north of the railroad tracks, unless it was for daytime work. That’s the area that’s on fire today.

I get why people who don’t understand LA ecology or the history of white supremacy here blame climate change for these fires. But it’s not that simple. The fact that we’ve long suppressed fires for wealthy segregated areas is what’s fueling these massive fires today.

I hadn't heard this! I went to high school there. Googling now.

Looks like they got it contained very quickly. I was almost about to cry. I love that little town.

Is your family several generations deep in Monrovia? If so, ask them about what it was like 30, 40, 50 years ago... there’s been a lot of silencing of the recent past there.
-
Unfortunately, no. Just lived there for my high school years. Mom wanted us away from the wildness of L.A. I don't doubt what you're saying though. Not at all.

Not entirely accurate. James Monroe's namesake Monrovia is actually in Liberia. Monrovia, CA was named after William Monroe, councilman of early Los Angeles and part owner of the rancho the city was founded in.

You're leaving this fake news up? Obviously facts aren't your forte. Not only was a 5 acre arson set brush fire,NOT volcanic, but our founder was William Monroe, not James. AND our schools were desegregated along with the rest of America. And.. FYI.. had a black mayor 4 -20 years
