Mexico City used to be Lake Texcoco. People started settling near the lake several thousand years ago, building complex cities nearby.

"Mexico City is like building on Jello!" they write. How did it get that way? Bc Europeans destroyed a lake like they destroyed a people.

Writing about earthquakes/soft soil/Mexico City without explicitly writing about colonization is a second erasure, a legacy of colonization.

When your subtext is that Mexicans are dumb/silly for building in Mexico City, you're reifying the violence of colonization.

This thread is horrifying and fascinating. I had no idea and I majored in HISTORY ffs. Wasn’t taught in@any of my classes
-
The history of colonialism is taught better now, but not in the detail we should. It affects us more than people realize.
-
And you just know people who grew up in my generation and older, who weren't taught this at all, usually shake their head and dismiss it
-
I'm not saying it's taught well universally. But most liberal universities acknowledge it, although detail is often scarce.
-
Revamping last tweet - should have said, the history of western colonialism can be traced back to at least the Romans.
-
Given most universities' love of focusing on western history and worship of the Romans, you'd think more would offer courses on colonialism
-
Shouldn't be that much of a stretch to do it well and in depth!
-
My sister is the archeology major, but iirc the problem is lack of funding and image. Discovering colonial atrocities<Classical anything.

I wonder if this ties into Japanese being higher on the colonial scale than Mexicans so they don't get as much flak for Tokyo earthquakes.

That's history, known since the beginning. Perhaps they should show up and find something news worthy, like the way the people band together
