Capital cities in Latin American are often the stand-in for the rest of the country; most everything else is considered provincial/backward.

Mexico City. Lima. Buenos Aires. Capitals command attention in a way other cities cannot. US fails to understand this about our neighbors.

Part of the added irony is that capital cities are often autonomous. So damn unique. Yet so able to represent the rest of the country.

It's one of Latin America's worst features. And AP played right along with it: reporting the earthquake in Mexico City instead of Puebla.

I live in Puebla. While it's true that the epicenter was here, the deaths are in CDMX. I don't fault the AP for reporting on that
-
Kind of ironic, then, that you yourself didn't tweet that the earthquake was in DF, but specifically in Puebla.
-
In addition, please keep you summer abroad comments to yourself. Your overnight-expertise in a country you're not from isn't welcome here.

Excuse me? I live here

Yeah, that misreporting by the AP is akin to saying an earthquake with an epicenter near Fresno was "in Los Angeles". Sloppy journalism.

Thank you! It may have been felt in DF but it was definitely 5km from Raboso, Puebla!

That's like saying a Seattle earthquake had it's epicenter in Portland. Close but not exactly.

Mexico City was also mentioned because millions more live in it. Please get your head out of your ass

Looks like about 70 miles from Mexico City & 35 miles from Puebla, but other points understood. V near Izucar de Matamoros, worried for them
