Hey so a couple things about the eclipse. You know I'm a bad amateur astronomer and I was excited about it for a while. BUT...
-
-
There's an eclipse frenzy! Same neighbors that kinda clown me for looking at the stars and planets are now asking me about the eclipse lol.
-
That frenzy has hit the best towns to see the eclipse in, too. So I was probably gonna get caught in a bad traffic thing that day in Oregon.
-
The other thing that makes it ok for me to miss this one? Another total eclipse is coming soon. I'll give you the pleasure of looking it up!
-
If you're in LA I'd advise you to not go to an obvious place like the observatory to watch the eclipse. You'll get stuck in traffic and cry.
-
This is true for lots of places. Eclipse frenzy means eclipse traffic. Plan way ahead if you're not gonna be at your home/work/school.
-
Another thing: eclipse sunglasses. They exist for a reason and will prolly sellout. Do NOT use regular sunglasses. https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/safety
-
You can also use a couple of pieces of paper and watch the eclipse through a pinhole. There are lots of variations. All are cool.
-
Finally: there's already lots of inaccurate eclipse stuff online. Even from otherwise reputable sources. Check twice. Or three times.
-
Just now, I entered my zip code on a reputable news site to check the eclipse time. It said it would start at 10a and last 15 hours.
-
It starts at 9a and last three hours. So yeah. Poke around, review your basic astronomy, and have fun!
-
And remember we get another total eclipse over Mexico/US/Canada soon. If anything goes wrong for you Aug 21, consider it a practice run!
-
Wai wai wait! The most important eclipse tweet of all (I should have thought my thread out some more sorry):https://twitter.com/arseniomataka/status/893557083554983936 …
-
I'll be back soon enough asking all of you to join me in a pledge to unplug for the eclipse. It's a fundamental environmental justice issue.
-
Following up on eclipse thread: this is basically a list of all the places you prolly want to avoid because traffic: http://www.laweekly.com/arts/where-to-watch-the-2017-solar-eclipse-in-la-8503029 …
-
Going to the observatory for the eclipse is like the worst idea ever. There aren't multiple lanes or even side streets. You'll get stuck.
-
Several suggested that the library is giving away free eclipse glasses. In LA, that's kinda true but *very* limited: https://colapublib.org/eclipse/
-
If you don't already have eclipse glasses, get them now. But we can also watch with pinholes -- or things that have holes like colanders.
-
If you think about it, we non-astronomers don't really observe the sun by watching it. We understand it through its light and shadows.
-
This is what traffic is going to look like trying to get to the observatory on Monday in LA. Don't do it.https://twitter.com/ABC/status/898306455434022912 …

California uses a lot of solar energy; that power will be reduced on Monday due to the eclipse. It's actually an environmental justice issue.
-
When solar and/or wind energy is down, we have to rely on other sources of energy. Hydro energy's an option, given that the drought is over.
-
That probably won't be enough. California will likely have to increase its use of natural gas energy. Guess where are those plants located?
-
A lot of those natural gas plants are in communities of color. Disproportionate burden and what not.... including during the eclipse.
-
California's public utilities commissions is asking people to reduce their energy use on Monday, but so far only 639 people have pledged :/
-
I care about poc's disproportionate burden so I pledged not to charge my electronics during the eclipse. Join me: https://ia.cpuc.ca.gov/form/page.aspx?id=1 …pic.twitter.com/P2IFbCjLP2
-
It won't cost you anything. And I'm *positive* thousands of you have a minute to spare to take this eclipse pledge: https://ia.cpuc.ca.gov/form/page.aspx?id=1 …
-
It's wild to me that environmental journalists haven't written about this. Bound to happen when you don't hire black/native/latinx writers.pic.twitter.com/EB6nCbZu0P
