In a column about insular rich culture, Brooks insinuates that Italian food is for the swanky and Mexican food is for the poor. Ridiculous.

Poor people eat Italian food all the time -- like spaghetti. And rich people love Mexican food they exoticize tf out of.

But Brooks is subtly extending this notion far beyond food. It's about culture. Italian/european = rich. Mexican/latinx = poor.

I, too, only have a high school degree. What year at Princeton do they teach Italian deli meats?(Anywhere but New York, you could ask, too.)

What is a "striatta baguette" and how is a French word somehow Italian. I'm sorry, I'm only a professional writer with a college education.

a not so subtle implication that a lack of formal education probably means you like brown people food. italian was too posh, of course 🙄

and of course his "friend" is a woman. he probably feels so big because he managed to work in a woman in his story, only to belittle her.

My dad (half Italian) never went to High School, grew up poor, and guess what? Knew those foods and could pronounce them better than Brooks.
