When we talk about one specific group of indigenous people, we're talking about a people with a shared language, culture, political system.

But when we talk about vast groups of indigenous peoples, we're talking about different languages, cultures, political systems.

You would never say "North American nation" to refer to Canada, US, and Mexico. You say nations, with an s at the end. It's important.
-
As an indigenous person, it's important to me that we not collapse all indigenous peoples into one. It's like pretty basic common decency.
-
I had this conversation about indigenous peoples with an s at the end with the all-white editors and writers at my last job like ten times.
-
I'm not sure what I expected after the third time. Being that they're journalists, I supposed they would at least care about proper grammar.
-
It's especially ironic: English isn't my first language, editors at my last job would sometimes poke fun at my English/say it wasn't good.
-
Anyway, I saw an RT from my last job. Sure enough, they went with "indigenous people" in a headline. Might as well read: "we dgaf."
