I have no idea what's going to happen to #GuadalupeGarcia. I do remember interviewing her years ago for a story in Phoenix.

A lot of people assume Arpaio only targeted undocumented immigrants. That's wrong. It was also documented immigrants. And it was Yaqui, too.
-
Think about the irony: a white man whose family had arrived from Italy a few decades ago profiled Native Americans who've been here forever.
-
Phoenix was wild back then. I remember a man w a baby stroller in a grocery store. He had a swastika tattoo on his arm and a 44 on his hip.
-
Lots of white folks reveled in making sure poc were scared the whole time. It was one of the most oppressive cities I've ever spent time in.
-
I bring this up because of you look back about ten years ago, there were very few people acknowledging Joe Arpaio's reign of terror.
-
Politicians in Phoenix and Arizona who today act like they led the charge against Arpaio didn't oppose him ten years ago.
-
It was a tiny group of activists and organizers and everyday people who opposed Arpaio. They're all still there, too—like Carlos García.
-
It took them a long, long, long time to win against Arpaio. And clearly there's another brand new form of terror happening now.
-
Like I said, I don't know what will happen tonight or tomorrow. There are usually a ton of losses before any serious and big win.
-
But I've been thinking about all the stories I've been lucky enough to get to write this last decade about poc doing the most crucial work.
-
... and thinking about how important all those lessons were to learn for what's happening now.
-
Make sure you follow
@PuenteAZ and@ErikaAndiola for what's happening in#Phoenix. -
If you need a break, watch this video. One of the undocumented people featured in it is
@ErikaAndiola.https://youtu.be/0lNJviuYUEQ -
In real life,
@ErikaAndiola was a pretty high profile immigrant. So ICE raided her mother's home in the middle of the night took her. -
ICE took Andiola's mom and placed her in detention. They set her deportation date. But Andiola helped fight for her mom's release. And won.
-
Andiola went on to become Bernie Sanders' press secretary. If you don't already know about her, look her up.
-
And look up all the other poc whose stories you've missed. They were the ones doing the work when you thought things were ok before Trump.
