In one way or another, sanctuary cities protect immigrants. When I say immigrants, who do you think of? Probably non-black latinxs.

Yet black immigrants are disproportionately targeted for detention and deportation. Are black immigrants protected in sanctuary cities?

One of those small cities is Sanford, Florida. Ring a bell? It's the place where George Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin.

George Zimmerman is not an immigrant, but he is latino. Sanctuary cities are meant to protect people who look like him.

People who look like Zimmerman get profiled by anti-immigrants, esp in places like Arizona. It's... complicated. But not that complicated.

People who look like Trayvon Martin are profiled anywhere. They're also profiled by people who look like George Zimmerman.

So when we talk about sanctuary cities, who is it that we think deserves protection? And why do we draw a line at black people?

I've been reading a lot of posts about "I'll open my home to x immigrant." What does that immigrant look like in your mind?

If you're providing quarter for immigrants, does that include black immigrants? If you defend sanctuary cities, do you defend black people?
