I know Friday feels like it's coming at you like a big rig barreling behind you on a one-lane highway. All you can do is brace yourself.

-
I also grow some food. Not too much, but enough to know the little joys it can bring. So here's what I've been doing:
-
I rounded up some horticultural vermiculite (you can also use perilite and/or pebbles), some soil, some seeds, and some old jars.
-
I stacked em up like so. Soaked the soil a bit. Covered the jar to make it a little greenhouse.pic.twitter.com/NF9ZXg1gUN
-
On January 1, I opened one of the jars and added some seeds right below the soil. Closed it again.pic.twitter.com/BQQHsfkemJ
-
I spray it with water a couple times a day and kept the jar shut. A few of days later, once I start to see green, I remove the top of jar.pic.twitter.com/grjp3bGiBN
-
Here are the basil seeds I planted in a little jar about two weeks ago. No matter what's happening in the world, these seeds still grow.pic.twitter.com/VpnANSdPBH
-
What's nice about little jars is that you can take them with you on road trips and even tuck them away on domestic flights.
-
You can also send these to friends (especially in the early stages) pretty easily. You can also just enjoy them yourself.
-
Come Friday morning, right as a racist, misogynist megalomaniac is being inaugurated, I'll be placing seeds under soil. They will grow.
-
When everything else feels so intimidating and out-of-control, the little seeds will be generous and predictable. And that feels important.

Good morning. I planted seven Hopi blue corn seeds one week ago during inauguration. This is what happens when you bury seeds.pic.twitter.com/95vyEQUNyE

Overdue update on Inauguration Day basil; finally transplanted today. Look at these roots and leaves. Despite the despot, they still bloom.pic.twitter.com/SqnvDnJaOF
-
Some of the leaves got a little bruised during transplant. This happens. It'll be ok. (And yes, this is a metaphor.)

Inauguration Basil update. Literally an herb is doing way better than the president.pic.twitter.com/2pgXo9R0Ky

Periodic update: Inauguration Pesto.pic.twitter.com/1s7KUqJnux
-
I'm specifically storing the first two batches of pesto in the same two jars I used to incubate the seeds in back in January.

Inauguration Basil update: I’m letting some of the stems bolt. I’ll save the seeds from these flowers to plant a new batch in a few months.pic.twitter.com/9OjfGPKzS2
