What only some knew then was that AFL's statement was released one day after the Building Trades sent this letter: https://grist.files.wordpress.com/2016/09/ltr-from-nabtu-president-mcgarvey-to-afl-cio-president-trumka-1.pdf …

Building Trades is considered by many union members and federation/union staffers as the mostly white, exclusionary part of the AFL.
-
So anyway there's been a lot of internal fallout from the AFL's statement. It's almost impossible to talk to anyone on the record about it.
-
But it's a real thing happening right now within the AFL and its unions. You can read more here:http://grist.org/business-technology/big-labor-has-an-identity-crisis-and-its-name-is-dakota-access/ …

The more diverse, more progressive side of labor will tell you that jobs and the environment go hand in hand — if you work for it.
-
It's an important argument at a time when the energy sector is *already* transforming. I'm in Cali, which is decades ahead on this...
-
While some talk about the alternative energy switch as a future scenario, anyone paying attention in Cali knows it's already happening.
-
Cap and trade is old news here. We're already running electric buses and stuff. Lots of challenges — but it's not in the future: it's now.
-
I mention this bc it's not just labor: alternative energy reality is here. Might take a decade or two where you're at, but it WILL happen.
-
Also already happened in Cali: the diversity thing. Like we tf diverse here and feels like it's always been this way. That's spreading, too.
-
I mention this bc it's not just labor: people of color leading is here. Might take a decade or two where you're at, but it WILL happen.
-
No matter where you're at, it might be a good time to check in with reality. The now, and the future, is full of alternative energy and poc.
-
It's hardly a matter of right or wrong. It's a matter of accepting what is, and working w that. For energy. For diversity. For everything.

I've been more and more open to the idea that we kick the trades out of labor movement. They're reactionary bastions.
