A white person can too often yell stunning profanities, pull out a gun, assault an officer, and more—but their humanity remains intact.
Cops, and pretty much everyone else, have what researchers call implicit bias—an unconscious preference for whiteness/aversion for blackness
I've written about implicit bias in the past; I don't think much has changed:http://www.colorlines.com/articles/putting-casual-racism-trial …
You can take an implicit bias test, and I encourage white folks especially to do so (but pls also read next tweet) https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/takeatouchtest.html …
If you're white and take implicit bias test, please consider not sharing results with a person of color. Please lean on your white friends.
I say this because you almost certainly got biases against blackness. And telling people of color that is... it's awkward and taxing on us.
Sharing results with your white friends and family and talking through it might be a lot more productive.
Again: if you're white, please don't share you implicit bias test results with me. I'm not here to give you a cookie or to absolve you. Ty.
@blackgirlinmain There's so much to be misunderstood by this conversation!
Implicit bias doesn't mean you're racist! So would you explain what is implicit bias?
Here. I wrote an entire article about it years ago: http://www.colorlines.com/articles/putting-casual-racism-trial … @haskinstheodore @blackgirlinmain
@Colorlines Thank you!
