You want people to vote? Create same-day registration, no ID needed. That's it. That's all.

This is how voting was conducted for the bulk of US history: same-day registration, no ID required. This was the standard.

Up until a few months ago, same-day registration, no ID needed voting was even in the standard in North Dakota.

That's not to say native voters didn't face serious challenges in North Dakota with lax voting regulations, of course.

But there is no good reason whatsoever why each and every single state can't register voters on the same day they vote. None!

And when it comes to needing ID, this is brand new, too. It started in the South—because you know who couldn't get ID, right?

The modern version of voter ID is Kris Kobach's wet dream, and it effectively leaves already vulnerable people disenfranchised.

Who can't get an ID? Let's start with natives, who are more often born far away from places that hand out birth certificates.

Let's think about Puerto Ricans who moved stateside and have to deal with officials who can't even locate their birth certificates.

Think about black and latino people who simply can't afford to get an ID. Ever been poor? $30 will break you. It's food for a week or vote.

Think about trans people who have ID but it doesn't correspond to their gender. They have to show ID to perfect stranger to vote. Awful!

Think about the woman at the shelter who ran out with her kids and the clothes on their backs. No ID? Sorry, she can't vote.

And then there's all the people who can't even get to their polling place. I'm talking about driving two hours, one way, to cast a ballot.

You really want people to vote? Make same-day registration, ID-free voting a thing, with polling places everywhere. Make a national holiday.

I somehow forgot to mention people in jail or prison: why are they denied their right to vote? In or out of prison, it's their right!

As we know, people of color are criminalized at a much higher rate than whites. Conveniently, this messes with their right to vote, too.
