I also wish @SecretaryJewell talked about the way people of color are sometimes treated by overwhelmingly white rangers at #NationalParks.

To this day, lots of black folks don't feel welcome, even when it's
#NationalParkWeek! -
As a latina, I can speak to the way I've personally been treated by some rangers at
#NationalParks. In short: not good. -
For example, I dread the idea of having to pass a border patrol station on the way to a
#NationalPark.... Other folks do, too. -
And... I've hinted it but not said it explicitly on this thread:
#NationalParks are all on colonized land. This is all *indigenous* land! -
When we talk about diversifying for
#NationalParkWeek, let's really talk about what that means. For real real. -
How comfortable do people feel participating in
#NationalParkWeek on usurped land, with segregationist history, and all-white park rangers? -
I'm not saying let's boycott
#NationalParkWeek, by the way. I'm saying let's be honest and open about the racist contradictions here. -
And yes, people of color still find ways to enjoy the outdoors. Proof:https://twitter.com/aurabogado/status/620665585932742656 …

But our approach is often different, since the ways we've been and continue to be treated are different at
#NationalParks. - 9 more replies
