Shouldn't all the white-only mainstream reporters writing about ICWA know the very basics of the law? I guess not.

There have been a lot of ways white people have tried to eliminate natives, including through disease, captivity, blood quantum, adoption.
-
Before ICWA was passed into law, white people were adopting out nearly all native children in some states. Here's why that's a bad thing:
-
When you take a native child, you take away not only their ties to that tribe but also the tribe's ability to literally keep existing.
-
If a tribe has 500 babies and whites adopt out 400, what does the next generation of the tribe look like? And the one after?
-
These racist, inaccurate, shit for articles about ICWA is what happens when you have all-white newsrooms. It's 2016. Hire poc. Hire natives.

@aurabogado@Eli_Fieldstadt In fairness, it's a "Native American law" in the same way that VAWA could be called a "domestic violence law." -
@RSGAT@aurabogado@Eli_Fieldstadt Even so, there's an established term for that, and its "federal Indian law" (aka US law) not "native" law -
@jakefawc@RSGAT@aurabogado I didn't write it. A video team wrote it. Would have checked it, but it was added after I wrote the piece. -
Ok but you did write things like "she's 1.56 Choctaw," right? That's just as misleading.
@Eli_Fieldstadt@jakefawc@RSGAT -
@aurabogado@jakefawc@RSGAT That is not misleading. That is factual. 1/64 -
The Choctaw nation doesn't use blood quantum, and Lexi is not 1.56% protected by ICWA.
@Eli_Fieldstadt@jakefawc@RSGAT -
@aurabogado@jakefawc@RSGAT That's why I didn't write either of those things. -
You very much *did* write that she's 1.56% Choctaw. She's Choctaw. She's a Choctaw citizen. That's it.

@aurabogado Any law pertaining to Native people becomes a "Native American law." Any policies pertaining to POC become "racial" policies SMHThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
